Spontaneous Spirulina Addiction

Another great day and excellent workout tonight.   On the advice of one of my friends who used to be a raw vegan, I finally tried the Spirulina Pie in the RAWvolution recipe book last night.  Holy Cow!  I was shocked.  The spirulina smelled horrible and I was very apprehensive about it, but boy when you mix it with the coconut, etc, it is absolutely wonderful.   I was reading its amazing qualities online, especially that it has 12 times the available protein–ounce for ounce–as beef.   I don’t know if my body is craving the extra nutrients or what, but that stuff is like drugs!  I was even jonesing for some in the middle of the night!

I always start my day with some Marine Phytoplankton and Zeolite under the tongue, followed by a delicious shot of Mona Vie, so I have been getting my sea nutrients.  But I had to have a bite of Spirulina Pie when I got up, sneaked some a little while later, and at lunch ate a bunch for dessert.  I still wanted more, so for my pre-workout meal I adpated a recipe I found online and made a spirulina smoothie of banana, young Thai coconut meat, spirulina, Elements for Life Blue-green algae, carob powder, and raw honey.  Oh my goodness, that helped with the cravings.

I am now addicted to spirulina.  When I smelled it in the store, I almost didn’t buy it.  I still probably couldn’t eat it without mixing it with seriously sweet stuff but wow, is it ever good!  Michael even tried it, upon my insistence, and he really liked it too.  The color is really unusual–a deep teal blue-green.   I read that the ‘phycocyanin’ which gives it the blue color is one of the most powerful anti-cancer compounds known to science.  Read more here:  http://www.chlorellafactor.com/ and at http://www.herbwisdom.com/herb-spirulina.html.

OK, now I am jonesing for more Spirulina Pie!  If you want to try it, the recipe is on Defiant Recipes!  Just click on the page link at the top.

Today was a great day!  I even was able to join in a Zumba class!  One of my goals in life is to become a better dancer, and the Zumba class helps with moves as well as being great cardio and an intense abdominal/core workout.

Michael had to work this evening, so I was on my own.  I love doing pull-ups and he hates them, so I jump at the chance to do them when I train by myself.  My goal is to get three sets of 10 reps each.  The closest I have come to that is 10, 8, & 8, but I will get there one day!  It’s so funny, too, to see the look on the guys’ faces when a little girl goes over to the crossover machine and busts out some pull-ups.  I even have to have a stool or bench to reach the bar, since I am ‘vertically challenged’, and it’s even funnier.

I also did a quick but intense shoulder workout this morning at home.  I like to do circuit-type workouts, especially the ‘300′ workouts, where you do 10 exercises for 30 reps each.  This morning I just did heavier weights and 30-60 second high intensity on my exercise bike between sets.

Shoulders:

  • Warmup on bike & stretch arms & shoulders
  • Overhead dumbbell press, sitting on stability ball for core training, 20 lb bells, 3 sets of 15, supersetted with:
  • 3 sets of seated bent-over rows for rear delts, 15 lb bells, and:
  • 60 seconds high intensity on exercise bike
  • Lateral Dumbbell Raises, 15 lb bells, 12 reps, supersetted with:
  • V-ups on stability ball for abs & core
  • Arnold shoulder presses with 15 lb bells, 12 reps each, with bike intervals in between

After workout I had my morning green smoothie.  This one was great!  Mango, pineapple, coconut & banana blended with collard greens & Sun Warrior vanilla protein, Sun Warrior Activated Barley, and Chia seeds.  Delicious!

Then I headed out to the construction site.  We are coming down to the wire and things are moving fast.  The hardwood floor guys got started & the electricians were working hard again today.  I stayed on the phone for hours coordinating the remaining items.   I also wrote an offer for a client on a great foreclosure.  I hope he gets it–it’s one of the best deals I have seen in a while.   We don’t have very many foreclosures here in Columbia, yet.  I hope it doesn’t start.

I finally made it to the gym and I was ready to pump some iron!

Tonight’s back workout was:

  • Warmup with light wide-grip pull-downs
  • Pull-ups, free body weight, 8, 6 & 6 reps.  (Hmmm….a little down tonight)
  • Wide-grip pull-downs, 100 lbs total, 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps
  • Seated close-grip row, 85 lbs, 8 reps for 3 sets
  • Hammer row with underhand grip, 50 lbs each arm, 3 sets of 10
  • One-armed Dumbbell rows, 35 lb bell, 10 reps each side

Then it was time for Zumba.  I didn’t do any extra biceps, since Michael wasn’t with me.  My biceps grow if I walk by a dumbbell rack, but my back and lats need more work if I am going to blow away competitors that are 15 years younger than me on stage next spring!  So I just concentrated on back tonight.  Besides, you work your biceps whenever you work back, as supporting muscle groups.

I am training hard early this week, since Thanksgiving will take up the last part of the week.  I may miss a day or two with you, since I will be out on the farm in Georgia, and my parents don’t have a computer or any way to connect to the internet.  Sorry!

I hope you had a great day with a great workout too!  If not, do it tomorrow.  And the next day, and if you keep doing that, it will become a habit and a lifestyle.   Defy ordinary!  Be extraordinary, stunning, fierce and confident!

Have you tried Spirulina?  Have a great recipe?  Post a comment below!

But I can’t defy Spirulina Pie, so I have to go now.  :-)
