Refined Sugar is More Addictive Than Cocaine!
Happy Holidays Everyone!
Be sure to click on the above article and read it. I was told many years ago by a medical doctor that if sugar was being introduced today it would be a Schedule III narcotic, which is the most addictive class of drugs. This study shows in dramatic fashion how addictive sugar is.
Right now, we are all indulging in delicious holiday treats, myself included! Just remember what the sugar does to you, and limit the treats to just a few meals. It’s what you do 90% of the time that really counts, as long as you don’t go overboard on the 10%! Moderation is the key.
A few helpful hints:
–Eat BEFORE you go to the party. By eating a healthy meal you won’t feel as hungry and be so tempted by unhealthy choices.
–DON’T ’save up’ for a party or Christmas family dinner by not eating all day. That sets you up to lose all self control when confronted with unhealthy choices.
–Choose as many fresh, whole, uncooked vegetables, fruits, greens, and nuts as possible at buffets and meals. Keep your fresh food intake as high as you can, to offset the fat and sugar in the other dishes.
–Eat especially healthy at all your other meals. Even during this time of year, there are really just a small percentage of meals that you eat at parties and family gatherings. There are over 90 meals this month that you will eat, assuming you only eat 3 times per day. If approximately 15 of the meals are at parties and family gatherings, that leaves 75 opportunities to eat healthy!
–This one is obvious: Exercise more! Get out and work off those extra calories. Go for a walk or run, go to the gym, ride a bike, lift weights, do yoga, whatever–just do something! If you can time it so you work out right before you go to the party, then the extra calories will actually help your body fuel muscle-building. Again, not over-indulging, but in moderation. Refined sugar is never, EVER healthy, even immediately after a workout!
By all means, enjoy yourself and have fun this holiday season. Don’t feel deprived, but don’t wreck your health and gain a bunch of bodyfat either. The true meaning of Christmas is not food and commercialism! When did it become all about that? Go back to the true meaning of Christmas. Celebrate the gift of life in the form of the birth of Christ, and the love you share with your family and friends, and let that be the focus of your holidays.
My wish for you is that you have a wonderful Christmas, filled with love and laughter. And may the New Year bring you everything you wish for, and a prosperous 2009.

wow, your post is very similar to what i recently posted about how to get through the holidaze without gorging on sugar…which is what i used to do and what i am witnessing all around me this year.
also, on a totally different subject, i love that you mention that food and commercialism are not the true meaning of christmas! i just wrote an essay about that last year. i would love to tell you about the new tradition that my husband and i have started this year…
