Getting to the root of the problem
This has to be a quickie! Just got back in from Georgia—we were visiting my family, helping out around the farm, and of course I was there in Sanford Stadium to see the Dawgs squeak by the Gamecocks! Whew! That was a thriller. When my man Rennie Curran slapped down that fourth down try for the end zone with 22 seconds left, I thought I was going to keel over. I get WAY too emotional about football!

Last week was tough for me. I feel like I am always complaining about pain, but the new Bombshell workout program is very, very intense and my body is still adapting. Last Monday, I had a great early cardio session, went to write a real estate sale contract (yay!), and then went right back to the gym to do legs, because I was trying to get both workouts done in the morning so we could spend Labor Day afternoon on our boat relaxing. Seems fair enough.
How’d that go? Not too well. I did great in the workouts, but a few hours later my lower right back locked up and I was in agony. I had been laying on a float in the water, and when I got back on the boat–Bam! Couldn’t sit down, but if I did, couldn’t get back up. I couldn’t even physically bend over to tie the boat to the cleats on our dock when we got back home.
Pain is a gift, though, and through this pain and some great work by my awesome team of therapists, I discovered a couple of things. First, there is a significant amount of scar tissue from my horse accident that is in my lower back on the left side near my spine that I was unaware of, until it flared up and announced its presence emphatically. Where my pelvic bone and lower vertebrae were twisted out of place in the accident, apparently the muscles and tendons deep in there were damaged, and are very thick, rough, and contracted with the scar tissue. But after therapy on them, which ‘hurt so good’–meaning that it hurt to get in there and work on it but it was a ‘good hurt’ that felt like it was being released–I was so much better the next day and have been great since. Second, apparently caffeine triggers my back pain. Yes, I confess. I had a couple cups of coffee the week before. Getting up and doing cardio is not the easiest thing in the world for me, and Michael’s coffee smelled so good……I caved. And I paid the price. My ND said that caffeine irritates the kidneys, which often manifests as pain in the same area I was having trouble.
So apparently, I handed myself a double whammy—-caffeine coupled with back-to-back leg workouts. But now we know that a problem exists and can work on it. That I am grateful for. I will be all the better for it in the future! And now I will associate coffee with not being able to put on my shoes, so hopefully that will help curb my cravings!
I didn’t miss a single weight workout, although I had to modify some of the exercises for a day or two. I did miss a couple cardio sessions early in the week, but made all the ones later in the week and did great. The point is, if there is pain, there is a reason. Find the cause. Don’t stop digging until you get to the root of the problem. And then fix it! Get rid of the cause, and the pain goes away.

I worked out at a great place called Bodyplex on Friday. There are no gyms remotely close to my parents’ house, except down at Banks Crossing, which is where the huge Tanger outlet mall is in NE Georgia about 15 miles away. There used to be a World’s Gym, which is now a new Bodyplex. I really enjoyed my workout there. The people were awesome–especially Dave the owner, Greg the manager, and Greg’s fiancee Summer. The equipment was excellent, the gym was very clean and bright, and the atmosphere was classy but hardcore fitness. A big shout-out to the Banks Crossing Bodyplex–you guys rock! If you are ever in NE Georgia, stop in and have a great workout! http://www.bodyplex.com/

Gotta go to sleep now. I slept like a ROCK last night after that emotional game wore me out. Still a bit tired today, and had one heck of a great cheat meal at Mom’s house for lunch. We celebrated my nephew’s 11th birthday and my brother-in-law’s 39th birthday today. Oh, I have to show off the cake I decorated for them! Quick story–my mom ordered a cake from Dairy Queen with the Georgia Bulldogs’ “G” logo on it and the DQ totally screwed it up and it looked terrible. Mom was upset and asked if I could fix it. I have never decorated an ice cream cake before, but of course I said I would try. Here’s how it turned out:

I don’t know if I have told you all before, but my latent talent is cake decorating. I can do wedding cakes. Funny, I can’t draw at all, and have no talent for art, but give me a tube of icing and I can do anything. And believe it or not, I just don’t like ice cream or ice cream cakes very much, so I didn’t eat any of it! That was NOT the case, however, for the homemade pecan pie! Ate the heck out of that!
I do have to brag on myself though. I made it through a football weekend and all the good food at Mom’s house without a single small derailment from my diet, until my planned cheat meal today, which is perfectly acceptable in my program. I was so proud. Not easy, but worth it. Thank goodness for those cheat meals–they give me the light at the end of the tunnel that I need!
Don’t let anything derail you from your goals and your passion. Push through the pain. Find out the cause, address it, get rid of it, and keep right on trucking!
Be Defiant!
