Winning the Masters National Figure Championship

Above is a link to the picture gallery I just uploaded from the Masters National Figure Championships, held in Pittsburgh, PA on July 24, 2010.  I was honored to win the National Championship in my division, which is the ‘C’ height class.  We compete by height, not weight classes like in bodybuilding.

This was truly a dream come true for me!  My goal for this year was to win a National Championship in Figure.  My secondary goal was to earn my pro card.  To win the right to compete on the pro level, you must win a national championship at an NPC-sanctioned national show, but just winning your division doesn’t earn a pro card at most shows.   At the Masters Nationals, they only awarded one pro card, and that was to the Overall Winner of all the class winners.  I did not win the Overall, so I am still vying for that elusive pro card!

The show was amazing!  It was held in the Sheraton Station Square hotel in Pittsburgh, PA.  Pittsburgh is absolutely beautiful and I truly enjoy my visits there.  My room overlooked the big river, & with the city lights reflecting in the water it looked just like a picture postcard!

Going into the show, I had a very difficult precontest prep.  I have done several shows this year, and had pretty much been on a precontest diet for several consecutive months.  My body just became broken down and I had a lot of trouble with exhaustion, injuries, and food cravings!  I was STARVING!  I hadn’t been able to eat many carbohydrates for several months, and my brain just wasn’t functioning well, topped off with two intense cardios and one weight training session almost every day.  My body just broke down on me.   The week before the contest, I developed a migraine headache, and I hadn’t had a headache in years.  I was so sick I just was physically unable to do my cardios like I needed to, and I was ridiculously dependent on coffee to get me through each day.

The result was that I didn’t come in to the contest anywhere near my best.  I still had some bodyfat and was retaining water, especially around my abs and my upper legs.   I finally broke down on Friday and took painkillers for my headache.  I had not taken ANY sort of drug, even aspirin,  for YEARS!  It broke my heart, but I was THAT desperate.  I knew I wasn’t where I needed to be, so I didn’t feel good about going on stage, and honestly was concerned if I would even be competitive.

But I tend to be extremely hard on myself, and apparently I was in this case too.  Even though I certainly didn’t present my best possible physique, I still won my class, which was the largest class of over 30 amazing women.  Each competitor is already a champion, as you have to win the right to compete in nationals.   I did lose the overall competition though, as I had my flaws and the lovely Melanie Burger presented the very best physique that day.  She is beautiful inside and out, and definitely deserved her Overall Title and Pro Card that day!  We have become friends and keep in touch often.

I talked with my coach about my difficulties, and we decided to ’start over’ and focus on the NPC Nationals which was to be held in Atlanta, within driving distance of me.  Plus NPC Nationals was 3 months away, in mid-October, and the other shows I had been planning to compete in were only 30 days out.  My body needed more time that that.

So we regrouped, and I began the Plan to Take Hot-lanta!  I will fill you in on the details of how I prepped for NPC Nationals in my next post!

Until then, thank you so much for your continued love and support.  It means the world to me!

Be Defiant!  Fight for Your Health!!!

Blessings,

Christy
