Wow, I am getting a little love from my fellow Living Foods people who are out there spreading the good word about how raw & living foods improve your health. I found a video today that my dear friends at Sun Warrior Protein made, and I didn’t even know about it until I stumbled across it on Nick’s website, www.RawNatureBoy.com. Check it out! They have little old me in there with some of my biggest heroes! I am about halfway through, under the bodybuilders.

Sun Warrior really is a godsend, and an incredible product. I highly recommend it. I use it several times a day! Even if it weren’t raw vegan, it is still far superior to whey or other proteins out there on the market.

And the incredible Raw Beauty, Lauren Michelle Kinsey, also known as Sweet Raw La-La on her VERY popular blog, Awakening Raw Beauty, was kind enough to include me in her “Raw Built Body Project”. Her site is wonderful and extremely informative. Here is the link to my post:

______________

Today was a three-workout day, but comparatively very easy. Rob and Shannon said they want me to recover and rest this week, as I have done all I can do to prepare my physique, and they want me rested and on my A-game come this Saturday. I did really bust it on back and arms, though. I was jelly by the time I was done. The cardio was a piece of cake!

We leave for Florida on Thursday morning. I will keep you as updated as possible!

And THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! To all of you who have shown interest in Team Defiance and have sent me some incredible comments. My heart is filled to bursting with gratitude for each and every one of you, and just knowing that I somehow make a positive difference in the life of others is the best gift I can get. I am humbled and honored to be a part of your life. And I promise to keep working hard and hopefully inspire others to be the best they can be.

Can you believe it? Two posts in a row? I am inspired today!

I just had to share my experiences from today, as I felt I made a major breakthrough on overcoming fears and being intimidated by false obstacles.

First of all, this morning, I shocked myself. Remember back when my big goal was to do 3 full sets of 10 pullups at full bodyweight? I got that goal one time, but only once. And I was using a ‘neutral grip’ where my hands were just slightly wider than my shoulders. I found that I was far weaker on the wider grips, and couldn’t complete many reps, even though I need to work wider to expand my lats. Anyway, I have been doing these really wide-grip pulldowns that Shannon calls “Billy Jacks” 3 times a week to work on widening my back. They are named for the guy who invented them, and they said his back is freaky wide. Plus of course, I have been doing all the other back exercises, but no pullups. They just aren’t in our regimin, so I haven’t attempted any in a while.

This morning, I got a wild hair and decided to try my Billy Jacks as pullups instead of pulldowns. I just wanted to see if I could. Not only could I—but I busted out 5 full sets of 10 reps each! No spotter, nobody around, just me and the bar. And this was using the widest grip possible on the apparatus! The first set was so easy I was amazed. The fourth set was tough, and I did struggle on the last 3 reps of the fifth set, but by golly, I got them!

A similar thing happened last week, as I was able to do 10 sets of 10 Dumbbell Presses for chest at a weight that, prior to Bombshell training, would have been difficult for me to even do three sets. Michael spotted me on that one, though. I tend to fail quickly, without much warning because my muscles just don’t get much of a burn, and I didn’t want to drop a heavy dumbbell on my face.

I was so proud of that accomplishment, but not nearly as proud and happy as I was this morning! Pullups are a big deal to me, especially because so few women can do them. I encourage each of you gals to get thyself to the pullup bar and just do what you can. Work up to it! Start with one, then two, and so on. Believe me, I started out barely able to get more than two!

This just goes to show how wonderful this training is! Since we move so fast, we don’t use very heavy weight, so I had no idea that I would gain this much strength. I am continually impressed by how effective Shannon and Rob are with their training routines and diet.

___________________

The other thing I wanted to tell you was that when you have a big obstacle in your way, face your fears and just bust through it! I had received my pre-contest workouts late last week, and when I read the first one–today’s workout–I was so intimidated. I had to start off with a giant set of four tough exercises, back to back with no rest, and three times through the sets. And then (cue scary music here) I was supposed to do a ONE-HUNDRED-REP set of Leg Presses (yes, 100!), followed by a set of 50 Smith machine wide squats, then 30 step ups on each leg, and then 50 plyometric jump squats. I was seriously dreading this workout, and I usually look forward to legs. I just was so doubtful of being able to get through 100 straight reps, and really had a fear of it. I had heard of pro athletes using 100-rep sets, and it makes grown men cry. Even Terrell Owens does them, thinks they are brutal, and he is an animal.

Well, I didn’t load much weight on the leg press, because I knew it is much more important to get the reps in, with good form, than how much weight we use. Shannon always says it’s not how much weight, it’s how you are working the muscle. I found a thumping motivational song on the iPod and unracked the weight. The first few felt great. I got through fifty without too much struggle, then started counting down by tens. I kept telling myself, just get through the next ten, and then I would stop for two deep breaths and start the next ten. And by the time I got to eighty, my legs were burning but I knew I had it in me to finish strong. So I pushed through the final 20 without stopping. Boy, it felt amazing to be counting 96…97..98…99…100!!!!

I racked the weight and realized I could probably have done more. I could have pushed myself harder and gotten more benefit out of the exercise. But I still had all those other high-rep exercises to go, so I didn’t feel it was a good idea to have nothing left after the first one. Plus I had NO idea how much weight I could push for 100 reps, so I guessed. I then made it through the 50-rep set on the Smith with excellent form, squatting deeply, and really felt each rep. But it didn’t kill me. I wasn’t puking or laid out on the floor, as I was afraid I would be. I made it through the step ups well, and then got through the plyo squats, although those just about got me. The last 10 on those, I couldn’t feel my legs! They had just gone numb, but I was still jumpin’!!

The moral of the story is: don’t let your fears stop you! You may have an intimidating task or obstacle in front of you. The fears are most likely blowing it up to be a much bigger monster than it really is. When I took that deep breath and plunged into that 100-rep set, I was so afraid of failing, of not finishing, of not being strong or good enough, of hurting myself, of losing my lunch on the gym floor, and of embarrassing myself if I dropped the weight or something. (I had no spotter, so I was on my own.) But those fears simply turned out to be mirages; misty ghosts that dissolved into wisps with each passing rep. As I realized I was actually doing it, I then felt stronger and stronger, and finishing the drill was complete elation!

Now, I wish I had pushed harder. I wish I had challenged myself more. I am not only not afraid now, but I am looking forward to doing it again and challenging myself! I don’t know when I will have that opportunity, but I know I am ready. This was such a rush, and an amazing feeling, and I couldn’t believe how fearful I had been. I had a real break through today. I shattered that paradigm of limitations that I had subconsciously placed on myself, and I broke free. What a feeling!

Talk about being defiant! Defying your own ghosts, demons, and fears is probably the hardest thing of all. Defy your fears. Look them in the eye, grab them by the throat, throw them down, and use them as a stepping stone instead of a stumbling block. After today, I will be less fearful, because I can look back at this experience, and say, “Hey, if I can do that, I can do anything!”

I just had to share this with you. First, to show you I am totally human and not some workout machine. I have fears and insecurities just like anyone else. I am not trying to brag here. In fact, I am a little embarrassed to expose my silly fears to you. I hope you understand what I mean by the elation I feel. And second, to show you that your body is capable of much more than you give it credit for! Go out there and challenge yourself. Be better than the best you thought you could be!

______________________

And now I have to go do my second cardio session, while watching my Atlanta Falcons try to beat the undefeated, awesome Saints. I don’t think it will happen, but ‘Bird is the Word’ tonight! Go Falcons!

I want to close with a great quote I just saw:

Today is the time of your life, to have the time of your life.

Think about that one for a few minutes!

I am so excited. I sent in my progress pictures this weekend to my Bombshell Coach, Shannon, and nervously awaited the verdict. I felt like I have given 110%, despite being hampered by my bad knees (more on those in a minute), but I was still concerned whether she thought I had made progress along the lines of what they are looking for. Shannon is a lady of few words in an email–she is extremely busy especially with all the travel, and she probably gets a couple hundred emails a day from all us Bombshells. I was so happy to receive a reply that included a ‘much better’ with two exclamation points and a smiley face! Whoo-hoo! All the work is paying off.

Progress pic 8/29/09

I hesitated to do this, but here is my progress picture. Nothing hidden from you guys! Not the best lighting in the world so no muscle definition is showing, and my friend Safiya Johnson is wearing my competition swimsuit in a national fitness competition in a couple weeks, so all I had was my old Richie bikini contest suit. I do like the coral color though!

After seeing Dr. Renick et al last week, my knees were so much better. I had great cardio sessions the rest of the week. I had a bad day Friday, though. I don’t know if I was just so depleted with diet, workouts and needing more sleep, but I was a weepy mess on Friday afternoon. I have had very few days that I wanted to work out LESS than I did on Friday, and Friday is Booty Day, which is extremely important especially for me. It took all I had to get in there and get going. I felt like my limbs were made of lead and just had no energy at all. But like always, once I got into it, I actually felt much better and was able to do more than I thought I would, and I put in 100% of what I had left in the tank. We all have those days where we just don’t feel good. You have to just gut it out and remember why you are doing this–keep your eye on your goal. If your eyes are on the prize, you won’t lose focus with all the distractions.

But then I woke up Saturday morning, and my knees were both swollen. Something in the booty workout didn’t agree with them. My left knee looked like it had a softball implanted in it. No pain on that side, but the swelling was worse. The right knee had all the pain, and still does. It hurts to bend it. I am considering putting grab bars in the bathroom and making it handicapped access. It hurts so freaking bad to bend my knees to sit down! The swelling went down over the weekend but the pain in my right knee got worse.

I can remember very few times in my life where I needed a cheat meal more than I did on Friday. But I had to wait until Sunday, because we would be eating lunch with my parents, and I really wanted some home cooking plus I didn’t want to hurt Mom’s feelings by eating out of a plastic baggie when she works so hard to make awesome meals. It took extreme discipline on my part, but I held firm.

On Saturday, we went to Georgia to see my nephew Matt play his first football game of the season. He was great! The team lost, unfortunately, but he did all he could to help their cause. I actually was OK with my diet on Saturday. It really helps from a mental standpoint to know that you have that cheat meal coming up, so it’s easier to hold to your plan when there is light at the end of the tunnel. We stayed at my sister’s house Saturday night and enjoyed spending time with the family.

Sunday–I chowed down on some fresh-from-the-garden goodies. I am so different–for my cheat meals I look forward to NOT having to eat any meat! I am substituting seitan, tempeh, tofu, etc for as much of the protein as I can, but I am still eating a lot of fish (from my perspective anyway). So all I wanted were some butterbeans and fried okra, my childhood favorites and major comfort foods. And I had two delicious homemade biscuits, complete with butter and jelly. And then I went in for a piece of Mom’s pecan pie. And then I ate my Spirulina pie that I had brought with me. And then I ate another sliver of pecan pie. I couldn’t resist! I felt so much better. Sometimes we all have to be human!

Really, most of my diet is still raw. Just not as close to 100% as before. For example, where they say to eat sweet potatoes, I just cut mine into sticks and eat them like carrots. Yum. I am eating almost all my sides raw, except for the brown or wild rice. Instead of cooked oatmeal, I eat sprouted oat groats. The sides are very well balanced and provide a lot of nutrition, and it has me eating a lot more vegetables than I was. Before, I was eating mostly fruit–which I miss greatly. Overall, it’s pretty good. And the results are certainly showing up.

I can’t really measure it, but I can tell my shoulders are a lot fuller, and there is a lot more separation from my deltoid to my bicep/tricep area. My arms and abs are much leaner, and even my legs are leaning up. Funny, the way I can tell the most on my legs is when I am shaving them. They feel hard and different from before. I can’t see that much difference, but it’s hard when you see yourself every day.

I modified my cardio and used the Stepmill yesterday and today. It doesn’t hurt my knees, but still kicks my butt big time on the cardio, and works my upper thigh and glute muscles until they are numb. Instead of sprints, I was climbing over 100 steps per minute–don’t think that’s not a workout! And I got off the machine and did all my little squats and jumps. And I had to work legs Monday night, but the pain kept me from doing any plyometrics. I wanted to do all my exercises, and I physically couldn’t, which frustrated me nearly to tears.

Today was another ‘let’s fix Christy’ day. All my ‘people’ worked on my legs today, and it really hurt. Fortunately, I don’t seem to have any damage, but my tendons and muscles are out of whack, which is putting undue pressure on the knee joint and also pulling it out of place. All I can do is keep up my stretching and continue to seek expert assistance. Dr. Renick had me run for him today so he could see what I am doing, and identified a few biomechanics that needed adjusting, so he worked on those. It definitely helped.

Our workout tonight was shoulders, and it was an awesome routine. I loved it. Very intense and I could actually see my shoulders pump up. It was one of the best shoulder workouts I have ever done. Michael joined me, and he loved it too. I am just so glad it didn’t involve any leg work! I went to Walmart and stocked up on ice packs and knee supports, so I am ready for battle. I refuse to let this stand in my way! I will defy my knee pain to the death!

Of course, I won’t do anything stupid. As Shelly, my medical massage therapist says, ‘pain is a gift’. It tells us something is wrong. I am working on getting to the root of the problem and finding the solution. Doing too much could cause injury that would really set me back. Instead, I intend to keep working to fix the problem and remove the cause of the pain.

Time to make my pe-bedtime smoothie and hit the hay. I hope you all have a wonderful week. Keep your eyes on your goal, and focus on your ‘why’. Don’t let anything stand in your way.

I am so sorry it’s been so long since I have written anything on my blog. I have truly missed it. Life has been extremely hectic and I just haven’t had the time to sit down and write like I want to. I need to do short ones instead, I know. I tend to take a long time, sometimes hours, to write a blog entry because I give it so much thought.

I have had some thoughts since the contest is over and some time has passed. The main thought is that I am so glad that I went to the competition and got my butt kicked. I definitely hate to lose, so I am not glad about that, but I am grateful for the lessons I learned and the motivation it has given me. For one thing, I am bitten again by the competition bug! I love competing and it really revived my itch to compete. I want to do more, more, more!

The main thing that benefitted me was getting out of my comfort zone. Around the gym, in my own little world, there are very few people I come into contact with that are really ‘ripped’ and muscular. Well, there are more guys that are, but it’s rare to see a woman in true competition shape. So it’s easy for me to get complacent and think I am doing pretty well. But there are some truly awesome women out there who are in far better condition than I. So it’s great to have that new yardstick to measure by, and more motivation to improve and reach farther than I thought I could–to reach my true potential. And that’s what I brought home from the competition: a burning desire to dig deeper, push harder, lift heavier, run faster, eat better, grow more muscle, and lower my bodyfat. I know I can do it!

Another lesson is that although I have much room for improvement, I am pleased that I held my own amid tough competition, even though I competed in less than my best condition. And I am also proud of myself for achieving the best condition that I ever had. I am already a winner because I overcame challenges to reach not only a good physical appearance, but the best health I have ever enjoyed. And I do mean ever! I can’t even remember a time in my youth where I wasn’t suffering from at least respiratory and sinus issues. If I had only known then that dairy was the root of those problems….

Since I returned, I have worked out almost every single day. I probably should take a day off and rest but I don’t want to! I have also been doing a whole lot of high intensity interval cardio, including sprinting. Going up to the high school track and running wind sprints makes me feel like I am back in high school. I am really enjoying that, and wish I could get up there more often. I have also upped my leg workouts to twice a week, with one day being higher rep with more plyometrics, and the other being ridiculously heavy and hard. Back and shoulders are the other main areas I am focusing on.

_________________________

My rant for today:

What the heck was going on yesterday on the Today Show? Was it bought and paid for by the aspartame lobby? Their ‘nutritionist’ was discussing artificial and alternative sweeteners. She started with saccharin, also known as Sweet ‘n Low, or the pink packets. Matt Lauer asked her about the dangers of using saccharin, and she stumbled around like a drunken goat avoiding answering the question, finally blurting out that the FDA ‘had given it its stamp of approval’ so it was OK with her. Then she said to be very careful and only have one or two items per day. She KNEW there were dangers, but didn’t want to upset the sponsors who pay big bucks to support the Today Show! Then, they moved on to aspartame, and this time, Matt didn’t even ASK about the dangers or issues, and she just gushed about how sweet and great it is. Splenda also received the gushy gooey treatment.

Then she got to stevia, which received a decent mention, but the only products they showed were Truvia which has stevia as a secondary ingredient behind some chemical sweetener. I love stevia, but won’t touch Truvia. Sweetleaf is a brand I use and like. Then she mentioned agave, but only processed agave, not raw. And the natural sweeteners barely got a few seconds, as opposed to the toxic chemicals.

It was such a blatant, disgusting cop-out to the Big Corporate interests. And the sad thing is, most people watching would simply accept the FDA explanation, without ever researching the truth. Like blind sheep, they are led to slaughter believing that the FDA has a shred of interest in protecting them from harm. The only harm the FDA is interested in preventing is harm to the huge profits of the chemical and drug companies!

Don’t be a sheep! Defy the FDA and the chemicals. Eliminate ALL those artificial chemicals from your life. They are NOT FOOD! They are chemicals, toxic chemicals, pure and simple.

____________________________

It’s great to be back. I am working on some exciting projects which I hope to share with you soon. I promise I won’t be gone so long this time!

Be Defiant!

Well the crazy pre-contest week diet has begun. I am still a bit uncertain about what to do exactly, but I am feeling better about it. I have been studying standard contest diets and just figuring out how to substitute raw foods in the protocol to achieve the same results. Thank GOD for Sun Warrior protein. It would be really hard to carb-deplete without it, and get enough nutrients.

I am fortunate that I found a compatriot on YouTube—RawVeganBodybuilder, aka Giacomo Marchese. His videos are great and he’s a super guy. I asked for his advice since he has been competing as a raw vegan already. And coincidentally, we have contests on the same day! How cool–two raw vegan bodybuilders competing on the same day, on different coasts, as his contest is in Oregon and mine in Georgia. Good luck Giacomo!

Today, I practiced posing and basketball drills. I can’t do any cardio this week, because that would cause me to retain water under my skin. Normally I hate doing cardio but naturally I don’t think I am lean enough, so I am dying to work out! I had an orange when I first woke up, then a big salad with greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, beets and celeriac root, with a few Brazil nuts and some of my homemade salad dressing–just a little bit. It has sodium in it, so that will have to go later in the week. Around lunch, I had a spirulina superfood smoothie made with fresh raw almond ‘mylk’, chocolate Sun Warrior protein, spirulina, Elements for Life Blue Green Algae, stevia, and a tablespoon of UDO’s oil. Pre-workout, I made my delicious chocolate ‘Muscle Mousse’ of avocado, chocolate Sun Warrior protein, water and a dash of Celtic salt. Yum!

The workouts are totally different this week. Since I am trying to deplete my muscle glycogen in the carb-depletion phase, I am supposed to change to a high-rep workout without going to failure. The goal is just to work the glycogen out of the muscles so they will be depleted and hungry for carbs later in the week. Hopefully, they will just soak up the carbs when I ingest them again, and will fill out nicely and be full of water, drawing the water out from under the skin into the muscles. This is what causes that really ‘dry’ hard muscular look you see in competitors. It’s not a normal look, and can usually only be achieved for one day. The trick is to make that day the same day as the contest. It’s easy to ‘miss’ and look better the day before, or even more commonly, the day AFTER the competition. Many competitors will come in flat and smooth, and after they lose, go out and eat in frustration–and then wake up the next day looking like a winner. The human body is difficult to predict and manipulate!

After my workout, I had another big salad, some Spicy Lime Cilantro Soup, and Vanilla Sun Warrior mixed with water & 5 grams L-Glutamine.

I was talking with a fellow competitor at the gym tonight, and we were discussing how easily we could shed bodyfat, water, etc. just by manipulating our macronutrient (carb, protein and fat) intake, cardio, and weight training. That led us to wonder how people have such a hard time losing weight and just seem to not have any idea what to do. It reminded me of something I read yesterday, that the most dangerous ‘disease’ is IGNORANCE. Most people just don’t understand how their body works or how profoundly food affects their bodies. I can see my body change after each meal! Any bodybuilder can. A single food–even a single nutrient like sodium–can mean the difference between winning and losing. The only cure for this ‘disease’ is education. We aren’t born with an owners’ manual. We have to SEEK the knowledge and make it a priority in our life. Health is our only true wealth!

I am really happy I am doing this. I am definitely learning alot about how raw foods affect the body, in detail under the microscope of competition. It’s a great learning experience. I did it the conventional way before, and I always felt so awful! I was ravenous, desperate for sugar, exhausted, fighting uncontrollable cravings, headaches, cramps, etc. This time, I feel great! I have so much energy tonight, with no cravings or detrimental effects so far. (I have a feeling the sodium depletion later this week will kill me, though. I love my Celtic salt and Nama Shoyu!) I do miss my fruit, and can’t wait to get back to my green smoothies. But it’s not a bad ‘craving’ feeling, though. I just wish I could have my smoothies. I can make it for a few days without them, but I will be blending like a mad woman on Sunday!

I am watching the National Championship Basketball Game between UNC & Michigan State. What a disappointment! I was hoping MSU would really make this a good game, but they are getting blown out of the arena. Bore-ring!

I will update you on how things are going. Right now I feel great, with good energy and excitement. I am looking forward tomorrow to having a critique of my posing, with great advice and instruction by a master. I need this, and am eager to learn. I am sure he will pick me apart, but that’s the only way to improve. I also need to pick up a few final things to get ready with.

This weekend, I will have wireless internet access in our hotel room, so I will update you from the show too!

Until next time, stay Defiant! Fight for your health. Defeat ignorance, and learn about your wondrous body. Every cell in your body is more complicated and sophisticated than a city of a million people! We are an amazing creation, and we have an innate infinite wisdom that is constantly leading us to better health, if we will just let it–and not fight our own inner physician! Fight the conventional medical doctors–not your Infinite Intelligence inside your own body!

BE DEFIANT!

Wow, what a great day today! It was really, really busy, but in that good busy way that you just love! Well, it all really started yesterday with a wonderful Lunch and Learn at the Cafe. Sonya Hoffman was excellent and so interesting in sharing about Reconnective Healing. We had a great crowd there, and the food seemed to be a big hit! That made me feel good, since I worked on food all weekend!

Today, I started with hosting the Senior Alliance this morning, serving Mexican Quiche and Apple Cobbler to people who had no idea what Living Foods are, and probably didn’t really WANT to know. But I converted quite a few! I met some wonderful people and enjoyed the meeting very much. The Senior Alliance is a networking group that I created many years ago for businesses that serve the seniors in our communities to gather, meet each other and create referral relationships to help grow their businesses and help more senior citizens. It’s a lovely group of caring people.

Then at lunch, I had the distinct privilege of speaking at the Shaw Industries plant’s Lunch and Learn. What a wonderful, large crowd we had, and everyone was just delightful. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone, and made some great new friends. I really appreciate the opportunity to share about raw foods, and was blown away by the interest in raw foods, and how receptive the employees were to the idea. If nothing else, I hope everyone starts making their own Green Smoothies! There’s literally nothing healthier than Green Smoothies on the planet.

Right after lunch, I had a real estate listing presentation. I was in competition with other agents, but I won! Yay! So I have some delightful new clients and a wonderful home that will be going on the market at a great value.

Then I finally got to eat — I made my favorite pre-workout meal: An avocado blended with water, raw honey, chocolate Sun Warrior protein, and raw cacao nibs. Yum! Gotta love a muscle-building chocolate mousse! Michael and I worked back and biceps today, although I am focusing more on just cutting right now, so I was doing much lower weights and high reps, with super-slow reps to really FEEL the muscle contraction. Then I did cardio afterward. I did the stair machine for a while until my ADHD kicked in, and then I had to get off and do something else, so I went in the empty aerobics studio and just kickboxed to some rockin’ tunes for a while. That’s much more fun!

Then for my post-workout smoothie, I actually made one without fruit. It wasn’t terrible. I used a couple of carrots, cilantro, collard greens, parsley, red bell pepper, a lime and celery. If I had garlic on hand it would definitely have been better. I resisted adding sea salt, even though I wanted to so badly. I have to cut down on sodium and fruit sugars for the next week and a half. My whole goal now is to get rid of any water retention to ‘harden up’ and get ripped for the contest. It’s now 11 days away!

Then when I got home, I was thrilled to find an awesome package in the mail. My competition swimsuit and costume had arrived!!! Kira Jones of Vandella Costumes (www.VandellaCostumes.com) made them for me and just did an AWESOME job. I was thrilled. The costume is adorable and the swimsuit is absolutely fabulous. I would put it on any stage in any competition. She truly did a professional, outstanding job. I will post pics when I don’t look like something the cat dragged in, like I do right now. The suit is a shimmery purple fabric overlaid with teal-blue glitter and trimmed in Swarovski crystals. It glitters like nobody’s business! I love it. I LOVE to ‘glittah’!!!

I am off to get some much-needed sleep now. I love you all, and I am so happy I get to share my fabulous, beautiful day with you. Blessings, love and light to you tonight and tomorrow.

Until next time, Be Defiant!

I worked shoulders so hard tonight that it was hard to lift my arms to make our post workout green smoothies! I am so proud of my dear husband. He has gotten so motivated and is really working out hard. And he is pushing me even harder, which is great! It seems to have finally sunk in with him that the scale DOESN’T MATTER! He used to weigh himself every day, and would fret if he gained a pound. Telling him that if you add muscle, the scale will go up but you will be tighter, toned and muscular, fell on deaf ears. Now he is gaining muscle without worrying about his weight—finally!!!!!

Now I don’t know what he weighs and I don’t know if he does either. The gym we used to go to had one of those doctor’s scales (with the little slide bar) right at the front entrance. You couldn’t keep him (or anyone else) off that stupid thing. It seemed that people were drawn there like a moth to a flame. Not me. He had to make me get on it. I couldn’t care less what a scale says. All it measures is the pull of gravity. It doesn’t know if gravity is pulling on fat, muscle, bone, or heavy cross-trainer shoes.

Pivotal has scales somewhere, but they are the small kind that looks like a bathroom scale. So now he doesn’t jump on it every day. And he is making such great progress! I have never forced him into being totally raw like I am, but he has gravitated more and more to it, and now is really into it. And it shows! He is very, very lean. His little love handles are totally gone, and he has definitely put on muscle. I am completely biased and have always thought he was totally hot anyway, but he is definitely getting hotter!

But I digress….back to the shoulder workout. I will outline the whole thing in a minute, but have to tell you about ‘crybabies’. A couple BIG guys at the gym were telling me about a great delt developer which is basically an isometric (meaning static, or just holding a weight in one position) exercise. You stand up with a heavy dumbbell in each hand, and then with arms straight, lift the bells out to the side just about 1/3 of the way up to shoulder level—and hold them in that position for 30 seconds. That may be the longest 30 seconds ever! We did 3 of those to burn out at the end of the workout. I know why they call them ‘crybabies’. We were crying for the 30 seconds to be over with!

Tonight’s Shoulder Blast:

Warmup on recumbent bike

Hammer Strength press, 4 sets, 1 warmup, 3 working sets. I got 45’s on my last two sets, for 10 & 8 reps. Yay!

Smith Machine front presses, 3 sets, 50-60-&60 lbs. with the last set dropping to 50 for a burnout

Superset of lateral dumbbell raises and Overhead ‘pulses’, 3 sets with 15 lb bells. The pulses are a limited range of motion press that really keeps the pressure on the lateral deltoid

Arnold presses, 3 sets, 20 lb bells

Superset front raises with a 25 lb plate and upright rows with 40-lb bar, 3 sets, 10 reps both exercises.

‘Crybabies’ 3 sets with 25 lb bells. Ouch!

Simple post workout smoothie tonight was spinach, banana, kiwi, pineapple, L-glutamine, & Sun Warrior Vanilla Protein.

I made a heavenly superfood smoothie for lunch today. I believe this would be served as breakfast in Nirvana! 1 & 1/2 Tbs Spirulina (of course!), 1 young Thai coconut flesh and water, 2 bananas, 1 tbs carob, 1 tbs raw cacao, 1/2 tsp Cordyceps, 1/2 tsp Blue Green algae, 2 droppers of vanilla liquid stevia–blend until a creamy concoction of pure bliss!

My breakfast green smoothie was awesome as well—-mango-strawberry! Yum! With dandelion & laciniato kale, & fresh aloe vera.

I can definitely tell I have dropped some bodyfat. I can see it in my lower back, particularly. I have seriously cut back on nuts and fats. I am not in full precontest deprivation mode yet, and I may not go too drastic. I am feeling my way through. If I feel I need to drastically change before the contest then I will change my diet even more. The contest is April 11th, so I am about 3 weeks out now. I have upped the cardio a lot too.

I hope you have an awesome day. Make it a great day! You can choose to be happy, no matter what, and you will attract good things. Make a difference in someone’s life today. Ask yourself, “How can I make a difference today?” and it will change your focus completely, and new opportunities will open for you.

Be Defiant!

Here is the question:

Christy,

I’ve been dabbling in raw foods for a few months and I really feel this is where it’s at! I really want to develop into a raw vegan bodybuilder, but there is no information on EXACTLY how to do this.

I’m 5′2″ and weigh 130 which is about 20 pounds over what I should weigh. How can I go about getting the fat off without sacrificing the muscle I built?

I guess what I’m really asking is how do you develop an eating plan based on raw foods that really supports muscle growth? I have a supply of the Sun Warrior protein, but other than downing green smoothies every few hours, how do I structure what I eat?

You are the ONLY female raw vegan bodybuilder I have run across and I would love to be able to do what you are doing with the raw food lifestyle.

How should I go about getting started?

_____________________________________________

My answer:

Wow! Your answer would require a book! Let me see if I can sum it up for you. First of all, thank you so much for such a great question. Your are correct–there is very little information on raw vegan bodybuilding, especially for women. I am experimenting myself, as I have no guidance either. This is new ground we are breaking and new trails we are blazing!

You will definitely shed the bodyfat on the raw diet. You may lose some muscle at first also. There will be a detox process and muscle may be lost. I did lose some at first while I was detoxing from my former diet and lifestyle. Be patient with yourself. Give it time and trust your infinitely intelligent body! Your bodyfat has come from years of eating cooked and processed food, and your body is most likely acidic. It doesn’t turn around overnight. Your body must flush out all the toxins and become healthy to begin to build quality muscle.

Some people do really well just getting all the protein they need from food, and they have no problems with large amounts of nuts for great protein. That doesn’t work for me. If I eat too many nuts, I have really bad facial acne breakouts. I still eat them, but in moderation. The Sun Warrior has been great for me! I needed some supplementation, I believe. I talk to other raw bodybuilder females who don’t use any supplements at all, and vehemently oppose getting nutrition from anything but raw food. I am in the middle on that issue. I found that the Sun Warrior triggered an immediate improvement in my physique, and continues to do so, and definitely has helped me increase my strength. You can find a few RVFB on various raw forums. Search around–Alissa Cohen has one, and Steve Pavlina is another.

The key is to find out what works for YOU. You are completely unique from me or anyone else. I had to experiment to find the right nut level (which is much lower than I would like it to be, as I love nuts more than a squirrel!). If there is one absolute, no discussion, no argument class of food that you MUST consume, it is LEAFY GREENS! The leafy greens are very high in protein, iron, calcium, magnesium, vitmains, minerals, phytonutrients, and even Omega 3 fatty acids.

You already have a good start with the green smoothies. I am big on salads with mixed greens and veggies, and I add various nuts and seeds–walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and hemp seeds are my favorites. All are high in protein, especially hemp. I make my own raw salad dressings, and strategically add ingredients I know I need, like olive oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, avocados, etc. I even try to build muscle with desserts! Like my Sweet Potato Pie, for example, which has pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, and Sun Warrior Protein in it. Tonight, I am experimenting with a mocha fudge ‘brownie’ made with figs, sprouted barley, chocolate Sun Warrior, carob, raw cacao, coffee extract, and (yes I know this isn’t technically raw!) very strong brewed Teecino for the liquid. There’s only about a cup in the whole thing, so I don’t think it’s enough to make a difference. I will let you know how it turns out!

I make a lot of my raw entrees based on nuts and seeds, also. Earlier this week I made Taco Wrappers, which are made up of several items, such as Taco ‘Meat’ made from walnuts, Cashew Sour Kream, Brazil Nut Cheeze, My ‘World Famous Stupendously Awesome’ Guacamole, all wrapped up in purple cabbage leaves. Yum! That’s a lot of nuts, but each wrapper has such a small amount in it that I don’t have any problems. I also make ‘meatballs’, ‘meatloaf’, ‘burgers’ and ‘barbecue’ from nuts and portobello mushrooms.

The last two weeks before the contest I will really cut down on fruits and fats more than I have already, and I will do a Green Smoothie cleanse. They will be more ’savory’ smoothies which are based on non-sweet fruits like cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as more veggies. I like to throw in garlic and onions to make them more of a green “Energy Soup”. But I keep my body fat low anyway, so I don’t have huge amounts to lose.

This is my first contest since going raw, so all this is still an experiment for me! I have found little, if any, guidance on how to prepare for a contest with raw food only, so I am basing my protocol on what I know has worked for me in the past. I notice that I put on fat when I have too many nuts and nut-based desserts, but I shed it quickly when I cut down on the nuts. I don’t have a problem with avocados, though, so I keep those in my diet, just not as many. I find a Green Smoothie cleanse strips bodyfat like magic. Basically, you just drink a Green Smoothie for every meal, or when ever you want one. I also read how Apple Cider Vinegar helps flush fat, so I am adding a tablespoon to my water bottle in the morning and evenings. Also, squeezing fresh grapefruit juice. Again, I am experimenting, so please don’t take this as set in stone. Plus your body may react completely different from mine! My concern is cutting out too much fat and then coming in ‘flat’ for the show, instead of having nice full muscle bellies.

One major point to remember is that muscle growth is in response to the stimulus of resistance from weight training, not really from the food. You can eat perfectly, but if you aren’t challenging yourself to lift heavier each time (still keeping great form of course!), then the muscles won’t grow. You must lift heavy and tear down those muscle fibers so that the body will be stimulated to rebuild them bigger and better.

I know this is a short answer to a deeply involved question, so I hope this is helpful. I am also posting it as my blog entry tonight. I appreciate your question, and I think the information may be helpful to many people. Thank you so much for writing. I wish you all the best on your raw journey. It is as much a personal development and spiritual journey as it is a food journey. You will detox not only physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. Be prepared, be tough and Be Defiant! You will come out a champion on the other side!

My mother had her surgery again this morning, and is doing really well. They re-set the wires and said that they had not punctured any tissue. I am leaving ridiculously early in the morning to drive to GA to pick her up from the hospital and take her home. I will be computer-less for a few days again. Sorry! I really need a laptop and an air card. I really need to sell some houses or something so I can buy one!

A quick update also on the contest prep status. I am feeling very fat and not close to ready. I know it is just psychological, because people are telling me I am looking leaner. I am always so hard on myself, especially when it comes to my abs. I have been doing a bit of juice fasting to try to speed up the fat loss process. It seems to be working already. At least I am definitely shedding water weight.

I have to share with you that I finally reached one of my goals. I did 3 sets of 10 pullups on Friday! Yay! And it was so dead at the gym that nobody was there to witness my triumph. Michael couldn’t be there, so I did it all on my own. They were neutral-grip pullups, and so my next goal is 3 sets of 10 each on wide grips, which are much harder for me. I was still very proud of myself. When I started, I couldn’t do more than one or two, so I have come a long way, baby!

I have got to get off here and get some sleep. More to come soon, I promise.

Blessings, love and light to you all!

This will be my last post for a couple of days. There are big changes happening with my blog. I am having it moved to become a self-hosted blog and website, which is very exciting because I will be able to do many more powerful things with the site. But I am a complete novice to all this stuff, so I will be greatly leaning on my web guru Alexander to help me learn how to do all this. Alexander needs me to lay off of any new posts and material while the transition is in progress.

The site will have a great new home page with links and pictures, and I will be able to add much more content and links to the pages. I hope to be offering you some great products–both free information and for purchase–in the near future. So please bear with me as I learn and experience growing pains, because it will all be worth it in the future.

____________________________________

We were supposed to get a great snow yesterday, and it didn’t happen here. I was so disappointed. I have always loved the magical beauty of that beautiful blanket of white snow. Of course, living in the South where it is generally 60 degrees all winter, snow is a fun novelty. I completely understand how it can be horrible if you have to live with it much of the winter. My nephew is 10 and my niece is 6, and they finally, for the first time EVER, got to see a truly great snowfall yesterday. They live just outside of Athens, GA, and it snowed 7 inches there. They went sledding for the first time and had a blast. Unfortunately, they also lost power and heat, so that part wasn’t fun at all. I wish I could have been there to see them, and do some sledding myself. I used to go crazy when I was growing up and it snowed. We had great hills near our house and I would play all day. It sure did snow a lot more back then. I remember that 3 years in a row it snowed or ‘ice-stormed’ on my birthday when I was growing up.

But we got SHAFTED here! No snow at all. It did start coming down in big flakes last night, but they only lasted 20 minutes, and didn’t even stick. But in the typical panic mode of Southerners faced with snowfall, all schools, government, businesses, etc had already been canceled. So we wasted an entire beautiful sunny day. It’s hilarious. The folks here absolutely lose their MINDS if it even thinks about snowing. They run to the grocery store for milk and bread (horrors), and if it actually does snow, it seems that they implant their heads firmly up their behinds and then attempt to operate a motor vehicle. South Carolina drivers are bad to begin with (Note to those unfamiliar with SC: turn signals are optional equipment on the vehicles, and a red light is merely a suggestion), but the incompetence reaches a crescendo if a flake of snow falls. Ordinarily, they would be out like on a Sunday drive, creeping along and holding up traffic, usually in the fast lane of the interstate. But if it starts to snow or really get treacherous with ice, that’s the time they pick to do their best NASCAR imitations, speeding and trading paint. That’s why Michael and I stay home. We know how to drive in snow and ice. We just want to keep the cars in the garage to protect them from the demolition derby that is a South Carolina snow day.

_________________________________

As usual, Michael and I hit a hard back workout, since it’s Monday. I love working back on Monday for some reason. Maybe it’s because I usually rest on Sunday, but I did intervals on the stationary bike last night, with dumbbell shoulder exercises during the recovery periods. And last Sunday, when I flashed back to high school and ran sprints and bleachers, I pulled an ab muscle. It was better by the weekend, but I pulled it again helping my father put out hay for the cows on Friday. And then I strained a hip flexor doing my bodyweight workouts Saturday. Hmmmm….I think my body is telling me I am 40! Ha-ha! Not really, I have always managed to hurt myself over the years. That stupid ab pull is aggravating. It hurts every which way I move. I was afraid I would have a hard time working out, but the back exercises didn’t bother it at all. Now tying my shoes, that’s another story. Go figure.

Back workout:

Warmup on elliptical, until the pulled ab muscle screamed enough to make me quit

Pullups, wide grip for three sets and neutral grip for three sets

Seated close-grip rows. I actually got 100 pounds for 6 reps on my last set! That was a benchmark for me. Four sets of 12, 12, 10 and 6 reps with increasing weight.

Wide-grip lat pulldowns, 3 sets of 12

Dumbbell rows, 50 lb bells, 3 sets of 10 each arm

Rear delt flyes, 3 sets of 12

Reverse-grip low rows on Hammer machine, 3 sets of 12, 10 & 10 reps, increasing weights

Cable bicep curls, isolateral, 3 sets of 10

Hammer dumbbell curls, 1 set with 17.5s, dropping to 15s, and then 2 sets with 15s

Wow, that was a long workout tonight. It was good too. I really felt my back working. For our post-workout smoothie, we had banana, mango, vanilla Sun Warrior protein, fresh-from-the-farm organic spinach and water. Yum!

__________________________________

This morning, I tried a superfood smoothie that Mike Adams posted on NaturalNews.com. It was an avocado, raw cacao powder, carob, green ’superfood’ powder, stevia, and an Asian pear. I also added cordyceps mushrooms (from Elements for Life), coconut water, and chocolate Sun Warrior protein. It was surprisingly delicious. I love avocado and chocolate, though. One of my favorite pre-workout meals is to blend an avocado, chocolate Sun Warrior, and honey or stevia to taste with enough water to make a thick pudding. Yum! Chocolate pudding that builds muscle and burns fat—cool! Try it sometime! Avocados are SOOOOOO good for you.

I will miss you all until I can post again. Please be sure to visit and see the new look for the site. Please give me your feedback and suggestions. I would love to hear from you!

Have a fabulous day, and misbehave until we meet again—Be Defiant!
